Jackie Kennedy was a fashion icon then and now, her frocks of fame superseding that of her president husband John F. Kennedy. Until today she is remembered as the First Lady of fashion, her cultivated, chic looks inspiring designers and fashionistas the world over.
Born Jacqueline Onasis she came into the privileged lifestyle of a socialite, growing up in New York City, East Hampton and her family estate Laasta. Eventually Jacqueline Onanis met and married into the prominent political powerhouse that was the Kennedy’s. There came a meeting of two prestigious families, the Onasis’ and the Kennedy’s and Jacqueline Onasis-Kennedy was made as she became the wife of John Kennedy, later to become the president of the United States of America.
The county fell in love with Jacqueline, affectionately nicknaming her Jackie, and watched her choice of clothes as closely as they watched her husband’s political choices. She was the epitome of grace in her day, and many young ladies aspired to be the Madonna that Jackie was.
However, as stunning as all her outfits were, Jackie truly brought the memory of the Pink Channel Suit to a place not easily forgotten in the minds of the American people, as well as every other eye watching the terrible tragedy befall that fateful day.
The morning of the murder of John F. Kennedy, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis joined her famous husband for breakfast dressed in a beautiful pale pink Channel dress suit costume, a suit that would be remembered forevermore because of what would happen later on that day.
John F. Kennedy was shot to death at the back of the presidential limousine while Jackie was wearing the strawberry, double-breasted pink dress costume suit, ensuring the garment everlasting fame, as the president of the United States died in her arms. She insisted on wearing the dress even though it was covered in his blood, flying with his body back to Washington in order for the burial rites of this famous man to be completed.
Today this infamous garment lies sealed in the National Archives, stored in a box it sits, possibly the most well known dress to have ever passed through the White House, in the steel shelf of a warehouse.
Jackie Onassis Kennedy was really the epitome of what a woman could be, beautiful and regal, she was full of elegance and grace not only because of the pretty dresses she wore, but because of the way she carried herself. She showed strength and depth on the arm of the president, supporting him throughout his campaign and office, even holding him up in the last moments of his life. All in a pink Channel suit that taught women that a dress can have more than an attractive impact. A pink dress costume can be the emblem of the woman who showed other woman what strength and beauty was.
